Master's Programs

The Masters Programs, through a rigorous two-year sequence of studies, equip future leaders with the conceptual framework and the specific skills they will need to be successful in Economics and Business Administration. The Graduate School of Economics has the following three major programs:
  1. Economics
  2. Applied Economics and Policy Studies
  3. Management Science and Business Administration

Economics Program

The Economics Program annually admits 24 students. This program is ranked as one of the best economics graduate program in Japan. Students take required courses in Microeconomics, Macroeconomics, Econometrics, and Economic History. Students are also expected to complete several fields in economics, and pass their master thesis. Then students get the degree of Master of Economics. The field options include Macroeconomics, Microeconomics, Econometrics, Public Economics. Monetary Economics, Labor Economics, International Trade, International Finance, Mathematical Economics, Behavioral Economics, History of Economics, Economic History, and Business History. Most graduates take Doctoral Programs thereafter.

Syllabus

Applied Economics and Policy Studies Program

The Economics Program annually admits 26 students. The program aims to train students to use economic tools to analyze problems in business and public policy, and to disseminate their findings to academics, policy-makers and business practitioners. Concentration in economics is preferred but not required, but students will need a strong undergraduate training in both economics and mathematics. Students take required courses in Introductory Microeconomics, Introductory Macroeconomics, Introductory Econometrics, and Introductory Public Economics. Students are also expected to complete several fields in economics, and pass their master thesis or research paper. Then students get the degree of Master of Applied Economics. The field options include Applied Macroeconomics, Applied Microeconomics, Applied Econometrics, Environmental Economics, Urban Economics, Economic Modeling, Fiscal Policy, Monetary Policy, Policy Finance, Labor Market Policy, International Trade Policy, International Financial Policy, Economics and Law. Graduates of the program obtain positions at Japan or International Governmental Agencies, Non Governmental or Non Profit Organization, and Business Corporations.

The Management Science and Business Administration Program

The management Science and Business Administration Program annually admits 23 students. The program aims to educate students of high promise who wish to prepare themselves in teaching and research in academia or for responsible positions in research organizations, or business enterprises. The program has the following three courses:
  1. Business Administration course
  2. Management Science course
  3. Management of Technology course:

    Business Administration course

    The Business Administration course aims to equip future leaders with the conceptual framework and the specific skills they will need to be successful in Business Administration. Students take required courses in Accounting, Finance, Management Science, Corporate Investment, and Statistics. Students are also expected to complete several fields in busness administartion, and pass their master thesis or research paper. Then students get the degree of Master of Business Administration.

    Management Science course

    The Management Science is primarily intended to prepare students for careers in research and teaching in Management Science and related fields of Business Administration. Students take required courses in Finance, Operations Research, Marketing Science, Management Information, Risk Management, Financial Engineering, and Statistics. Students are also expected to complete several fields in management sciences, and pass their master thesis. Then students get the degree of Master of Business Administration or Master of Economics.

    Management of Technology (MOT) course

    The Management of Technology Program, established in 2004, is a joint effort between The Graduate School of Economics and the Graduate School of Engineering at Osaka University. The MOT program is the most popular interdisciplinary at Osaka University. The MOT is defined as the set of activities associated with bringing high technology products to the marketplace. The MOT program aims to equip future leaders with operational and organizational ability associated with managing new products development and commercialization. Students take required courses in Marketing Management, Strategic Management, Knowledge Management, Applied Statistics, Students are also expected to complete several fields in Management of Technology, and pass their master thesis. Then students get the degree of Master of Business Administration or Master of Economics.

Admission Requirements for Master's Programs

The exact requirements are on the application form, which will be available in June.

  1. Those who have graduated from a Japanese university, or expect to graduate from a Japanese university
  2. Those who have received a bachelor's degree, or expect to obtain the degree from the National Institution for Academic Degrees
  3. Those who have completed, or expect to complete 16 years of school education overseas
  4. Those approved by the Japanese Minister of Education, Culture, Sports, Science and Technology
  5. Those who have completed, or expect to complete 16 years of distance education in Japan provided by relevant overseas countries
  6. Those who have studied for more than three years in a university, and, on the basis of the applicant screening, are recognized by the Graduate School of Economics as having academic ability equivalent or superior to university graduates
  7. Those who have completed, or expect to complete 15 years of school education in overseas countries or distance education in Japan, both provided by relevant overseas countries, and who have obtained specified numbers of credits at the Graduate School of Economics with excellent academic results
  8. Those who are at least 22 years old, and who, on the basis of the applicant screening, are recognized by the Graduate School of Economics as having academic ability equivalent or superior to university graduates

Admission Schedules for Master's Programs

  • The Entrance Examination in Summer
