Non-Regular Program
Students who wish to study a specific subject under the guidance of supervisors at either the undergraduate or graduate level may be admitted as research (“kenkyusei”) students. We accept two types of research students, as explained below.
- Research students accepted into the School of Economics must have graduated or have plans to graduate from a university; alternatively, they must be recognized as having academic abilities equivalent to those of university graduates.
- Research students accepted into the Graduate School of Economics must have been granted or expect to be granted a master’s degree; alternatively, they must be recognized as having academic abilities equivalent to or superior to master’s candidates.

Research students are not entitled to any credits or degrees, even if they complete research assignments. Admitted research students are required to provide well-prepared research and financial plans before studies commence.

Before You Apply
Every applicant needs to submit the following documents to the International Exchange Office at ieo@econ.osaka-u.ac.jp to obtain prior approval from the Graduate School of Economics before applying.
- CV (Form provided)
- Research Plan
- Trancript from the Last University Enrolled
- Certificate of Japanese Language Proficiency Test N1 Level (For Research Students at School of Economics ONLY)
Within the application guidelines, there is a link to ‘Faculty Members Available to Supervise 2024-2025.’ Please note that only faculty members who are affiliated with ‘GSE_EE’ and ‘GSE_BM’ are eligible to be approached for prior approval.

We do not accept any documents in the following cases.
- Personally sent (Please do not send the documents our faculty members directly)
- Received after the deadline
- Incorrectly filled out
